TPS win penalty shootout thriller – 06.10.2017

TPS Turku and Ivanti Tigers from Prague served the 1,087 strong crowd of Seinäjoki Areena quite a thriller! Finally, it were TPS who were able to decide the penalty shootout in the fifth pair and advance to tomorrow’s semi-final against IKSU. The final score stood as 5-4 in favor of the Finns.

Tigers took the first period 2-0 after a rebound goal and a ball deflected into the TPS net through one of their own players. The tables turned after the intermission as TPS tied it up in less than five minutes after goals by Tiia Nikkola and Laura Rantanen.

In the third, TPS took the lead for the first time when Jenna Saario’s shot beat Jana Christianova after a nasty deflection off a defender’s stick. Tigers were able to come back, though, after a foul by TPS’ Jannike Grönroos. Denisa Billa’s penalty shot was  called off when the ball moved half an inch backwards but the power play that followed paid off: Martina Capkova fired a beautiful shot right by the far post.

After a goalless ten-minute overtime, in was penalty shootout time. After goals by Tigers’ Lucia Kosturiakova and TPS’ Jenna Saario and Laura Rantanen, the Finns had the lead before the final pair. Tereza Hanzlikova’s nerves hold as she brought the Tigers even but the Turku team’s final shooter Milla Ranne was able to send Jana Christianova the wrong way and win it for TPS.

TPS will challenge IKSU for a spot in the final already at 9:30 am tomorrow local time as Tigers are to meet either Dietlikon or Sveiva for the fifth place at 10 am.
